Everything on Thailand Taxis is here to help you understand how getting around the country works. It is general information and hard-won know-how, nothing more. It is not professional travel, safety, legal or transport advice, and it cannot stand in for the current word of an operator, an official body, or someone qualified to advise on your particular trip.

Fares and timetables go stale fast

Prices, surcharges, tolls, routes, timetables, ticket rules and app policies in Thailand change constantly, and some of them change more than once a season. Any figure on this site is approximate and was true only when I wrote it. Treat every number as a rough guide to how much a thing costs, never as a quote, and confirm the current fare or timetable with the driver, the operator or the official source before you rely on it or hand over money.

Getting around here carries genuine risk

I will not soften this. Thailand has one of the highest road-death rates in the world, and the great majority of those killed are on motorbikes. Renting a scooter, riding pillion, taking a long overnight bus or crossing a busy road are all real decisions with real consequences. Nothing I write makes any of them safe. Weigh them for yourself, wear a helmet, buy proper travel insurance, and accept that the risk is yours.

Your trip is yours, not a copy of mine

Most of this site is what worked for me, a resident who has had ten years to learn the ropes and the language of a fare argument. Your route, your timing, your budget, the season, the traffic and plain luck will all be different. Read my accounts as a realistic sense of how something tends to go, not as a promise of how yours will.

In an emergency, do not sit reading a website

If something goes wrong on the road, stop and get help straight away rather than looking anything up here. The numbers worth saving before you travel:

• 1669, national emergency medical services (ambulance), free to call.
• 1155, Tourist Police, English-speaking.
• 191, general police.

On links to other sites

I point you to airports, railways, government bodies and the occasional booking or aggregator site for further reading and to confirm current details. Those sites are outside my control. What they publish, how accurate it is, and how they handle your information is their responsibility, not mine, and following such a link is your own decision.

When in doubt, ask the people who run it

For anything that really matters to your trip, check with the operator, the official authority, or your own government’s travel advice rather than leaning on what you read here. Nothing on this site should be treated as the last word.
