Thailand Taxis

How to get around Thailand without getting ripped off, lost, or left at the airport at 2am.
Every taxi, train, ferry and songthaew in Thailand, worked out for you.

Landing at Suvarnabhumi at 3pm and staying in Pattaya, do I really have to go into Bangkok first to get a bus?

First trip to Thailand, flying in from Frankfurt, landing at Suvarnabhumi around 3pm on a Friday. We are staying in Jomtien for the first week, two of us, two big suitcases and a backpack each.

Every guide I read says take the train into the city, then the Skytrain to Ekkamai, then a bus from there. That sounds like three changes with suitcases after a long flight and I am already tired just reading it. Is there really no way to go straight from the airport? Or should we just take a taxi and accept whatever it costs? Also somebody on another site said Friday afternoon is a terrible time to drive anywhere near Bangkok, which is not helping my nerves.

Don't go into Bangkok. The airport is already on the Pattaya side of the city. There are coaches from the airport itself, ground floor, same level as the taxi queue. I've done it twice with a hard case and it's the easiest airport exit in the country.

Did exactly this in March. Bus counter is downstairs on the public transport floor, bought tickets, case went under the coach, asleep before the motorway. Got to Jomtien in a bit over two hours. Would not dream of dragging bags through the BTS after a long haul.

Oh that is a huge relief, thank you both. So the guides with Ekkamai are just assuming people start in the city?

One thing still bothering me. If our flight is late and we miss the last coach, what then? And for a taxi, is it the meter or a fixed price for that distance? I have read about the meter rules in Bangkok but I do not know if they apply to going all the way to the coast.

Yes, the Ekkamai advice is for people already staying in Bangkok. From Suvarnabhumi you skip the city completely, and Hazel and Matt have given you the right answer: the coaches leave from the public transport level on the ground floor, and the run to Pattaya and Jomtien is about 2 hours in normal traffic.

Your Friday worry is fair. Friday afternoon to evening is the worst time of the week on that road, because half of Bangkok is going to the coast for the weekend. Landing at 3pm, by the time you clear immigration and collect bags it will be 4 or later. Plan on 2.5 to 3 hours rather than 2, and do not book anything in Jomtien for that evening that matters.

On the taxi. From the airport queue you can go on the meter, and the 50 baht airport surcharge is added as normal, but on a long run like this most drivers will offer a fixed price instead, and the apps will show a fixed fare too. Both are normal. The question you must ask is about tolls, because the expressway and Motorway 7 both charge and the passenger pays them. Ask the driver clearly, price with tolls or without, and show him the hotel address in Jomtien, not just "Pattaya", because Jomtien is further south. With two big cases, check the car has a boot that is not full of gas tank before you load.

If the flight is late and the last coach has gone, take the queue taxi or an app car, it is fine at any hour. Jon has put the whole route together, including the bus terminal end if you come back through Bangkok later, in Bangkok to Pattaya.

Thank you, this is exactly what I needed. I have saved the hotel address in Thai on my phone now as well, which my partner thinks is overkill. Coach if we make it, queue taxi if we do not, and I am mentally adding an hour for Friday.

Not overkill. Thai address on the phone has saved me more times than any app. Enjoy Jomtien.
